Week 1 – January 23 and January 25 - Dan Culbert

1.        First Day  Introduction and overview of the process and content;  get to know the class members and instructors; and tour campus garden and nursery areas

2.        Basic plant science /  Botany   /  Physiology   

3.        How to take samples for collections of soils, insects and plants  

Week 2 – January 30 and February 1 – Dave Marshall

4.        Soil and Nutrition, fertilizer, compost

  •          Compost pile

  •          Testing equipment and supplies

  •          Spreaders and equipment and calibration

  •          Taking soil samples

  •          Planting Gardens and Edible garden    

  •          Commercial Landscaping

 Week 3 – February 6 and February 8 - Linda Seals

5.        Right Plant Right Place

  •          Planting of  annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees

  •          Effects of environment on plants: Light, moisture, soils, temperature

  •          Go outside and look at plants:  What is right… what is wrong…

Week 4 – February 13 and February 15  - Adrian Hunsberger

6.        IPM:  Pest ID and Management

  •          IPM

  •          Diseases

  •          Weeds

  •          Nematodes

Week 5 – February 20 and February 22 – Larry Halsey

7.          Pesticide safety - half day

  •          Safe handling of Pesticides

  •          Chemical and mechanical control

  •          Worker protection

  •          Laws and rules

8.        Irrigation, Watering - half day

  •          Types of  Irrigation

  •          Low volume equipment

  •          Simple calibration

  •          Rain barrel 

 Week 6 – February 27 and February 29 - Henri Mayer

9.        Landscape Maintenance and Care

  •          Pruning

  •          Commercial:  Trouble shooting lawns and plants

  •         Homeowners:  Edible Gardening

  •          Erosion control

  •          Lawn mowers, and equipment operation and safety

  •          Landscape Maintenance and daily care

  •          Evaluation – (Take home test) distributed

Week 7 –  March 5 and March 7  - Alex Bolques   

10.     Extension and informational Resources

  •          Involve Ministry of Agriculture and Extension 

  •          Be familiar with available resources

  •          Text books and references

  •          Working with Computers
